Devin Swett has been creating art in different capacities, his entire life. Upon graduating high school he looked to a fine art college to further his interest in drawing and perhaps breach into the world of painting. After no real introduction or training in the field, frustration with the intricacies and an overall impatience pushed him away from the wet medium. Struck with an overall uneasiness about what to do next, not sure really where to go, he put his eye for composition – developed out of drawing – to use, and on a interest and a whim, he took a photography class.
Photography whisked him on a new direction and into a new way of thinking, one that he eventually came to put all effort toward. Finally in his last year of college he assembled a decent idea that he felt a strong interest in, and a bit of passion. From that idea a small project formed and finally saw fruition.
After graduation Devin was struck most, not by the difficulties implied in the cliché of “the real world.” (He has an understanding family that is housing him so that all funds amassed can be but toward the education attained) But by the difficulty of actually looking and searching for a concept that he will be motivated enough to see to final product. This project can’t just be a whim, or an interesting idea (though it could start out this way) this project needs to be a fully thought out idea that he feels strongly about fully and completely backing.
Artist Statement
What you have before you, in the galleries, are my whims, interesting ideas, or things that I deemed worthy enough to put the effort behind to make a final product. Each image at this point is meant to be stand alone; but because of the blindness out of which I am making these works, the possibility of a series evolving out of the stand alone images into a fully conceived project, is one that I’m not going to write off…
Enjoy.
